Rare meteorite rock types5/15/2023 In some cases, we can even see traces left by the magnetic fields that would have wreathed these space rocks a few billion years ago. By cataloguing the meteorites, we can build up a picture of how many of these not-quite planets there were and what they looked like. Scientists prize iron meteorites highly because of their link to these asteroids that almost made it to becoming a planet. Many of these giant asteroids were later smashed to smithereens, spitting out chunks of rock and iron, some of which eventually cross our orbit and end up on Earth. In other words, these were asteroids that were on their way to becoming planets with a rocky crust and a molten iron core, much like the Earth is now. Within this interior, iron, which is more dense than rock, would have gradually sunk to the centre. They are thought to come only from asteroids that grew so large that their innards melted under the extreme pressure. Meteorites are divided into three basic groups: irons, stones, and stony-irons. Only about 6 per cent of meteorites in collections around the world are iron-rich – these are rare and rather special beasts. As the name suggests, these are made of rock. The vast majority of the roughly 63,000 meteorites we have found are of a variety called stony meteorites. Out there in space they have been shielded from the changes wrought on terrestrial rocks by weathering and living things, and so they preserve an unblemished record of the conditions in the early solar system.
